In order to migrate your existing bank debit clients into GoCardless, we need to recreate their authorisations (mandates) in our system. To do that, we need their information.
For reasons of privacy and security, we are not able to obtain your clients' personal data from your previous payments provider on your behalf. As controller of their data, you will need to obtain this information and upload it into GoCardless so that we can then connect the dots and get your clients active. This will ensure that their service and payment cycle can continue seamlessly, with no action required on their part.
Required client information
The data required to set up your clients’ mandates in GoCardless will depend on where they are located, or more specifically where their bank account is located. This is due to different bank debit schemes imposing their own rules and regulations on what information is necessary to setup a bank debit authorisation on a bank account in their respective country (or region).
Across all schemes, your clients' bank account details, along with their personal details (such as full name, email address), are required. In addition to the required fields, up to 3 pairs of references (such as membership IDs or billing IDs) can be added to each customer’s record as metadata when you are formatting the data (in the custom.reference column). |
To make things easier, we provide country (or region) specific csv templates that include columns for all the data we require for your clients in each case.
These templates can be downloaded from the import tool within your GoCardless account, once your Onboarding Manager has made the tool accessible to you.

Our templates help to ensure that your clients' data is correctly formatted so that there are no delays when setting up their authorisations. When you import your completed csv data file into GoCardless, the file will run through a validation process. If there are any errors, you will be informed of this so you can make the necessary corrections before re-uploading.
Once your client data file passes the validation process, your clients' authorisations can be recreated in GoCardless and their corresponding records created in your account.
