Negative account balances

In this article we will cover how to identify why your account is showing a negative balance.

If you find that you’re not receiving payouts when expected (despite your account being fully verified) or you’ve received less than anticipated, it could be that you have a negative balance on your account.

Causes of a negative balance

A negative balance on your account is always balanced out by your collected funds until the balance is recovered. Whilst we are recovering these funds, any collected payments will remain in a confirmed status. Once your account moves to a positive balance and we can pay out funds to you again, all those payments will change to a paid out status.

There are three reasons why a negative balance may occur:

  1. Charged back payments

  2. Late failures

  3. Refunds

Charged back payments

If a customer has charged back payments it would leave a negative balance on your account, as the bank will have deducted the funds from GoCardless.

Late failures

Similarly, if a payment is paid out to you prior to being marked as failed it would be classed as a late failure. Late failure payments may create a negative balance on your account, if the late failure is reported days after the payout date.

Refunds

Refunds can also leave a negative balance for a short period of time, if you do not have the full amount available to process the refund requested.

Identifying payments related to a negative balance

You can check for failed, charged back or refunded payments by going to the events page and changing the filter to the desired payment status.
