Moving customers from standing order

If your customer typically pays via standing order, you can try using these key talking points to persuade them to switch to Direct Debit.

Key talking points

  • It’s a preferred payment option - Direct Debit through GoCardless is now our preferred way to take payments.

  • It’s less hassle to make changes - If the payment amount or date changes, you won’t have to set up a Direct Debit again (unlike with a standing order).

  • You’re more informed and protected- You will receive advance payment notifications and you’re protected under the Direct Debit Guarantee scheme.

(Optional)
Financial reward - Moving to Direct Debit saves us money on admin time and fees, so we’re passing this benefit to you.

Once they’re ready to sign up

Once you’re customer is ready to set up a Direct Debit mandate we would suggest explaining to them the next steps:

  1. After this call, you’ll receive a payment authorisation email from GoCardless which requests that you complete a Direct Debit mandate. This gives us permission to collect the agreed payments from your bank account at the agreed time.

You can find more information on this and an example email to send to your customer in the ‘’How to get customers to pay by Direct Debit’’ guide .
