Q: How does taking international recurring payments with GoCardless work?
A: With our global network, you can collect international payments from your customers in their currencies, then have the payments converted into your home currency and paid out into your domestic bank account. When you create a payment we indicate the transaction fee and give an estimated exchange rate, so you can better predict the final amount that will arrive in your bank account.
Q: Which currencies does GoCardless support?
A: We currently support payments in GBP, EUR, USD, SEK, DKK, AUD, NZD and CAD. We will notify you as new currencies become available.
Q: Where can my customers be based?
A: You can access a growing number of bank debit schemes via our network, and take recurring payments from customers around the world. At the moment, we can help you reach customers in the UK, the Eurozone, Sweden, Denmark, Australia, New Zealand, the US, and Canada.
Q: Where do I need to be based?
A: We can currently serve businesses in 30+ countries, so you can sign up to collect payments internationally as long as you’re in this list of countries.
Q: Do I need separate bank accounts for each currency that I want to collect?
A: No, you don’t need separate bank accounts for each currency. During our sign-up process, you will specify a single bank account as your home currency account, and all of your collected payments will be paid into that account after currency conversion.
Q: What exchange rate does GoCardless use?
A: We use the real exchange rate powered by Wise (formally known as TransferWise). It is the fairest exchange rate possible, which is the same rate you will find on independent sources such as Google and XE. We don’t take commission on top of this rate, and this service is simply covered by our clear international transaction fee of 2% + 20p, taken in your customers’ currencies.
Q: What are the hidden fees?
A: There aren’t any! We want to be as transparent with you as possible, with no fee hidden in the exchange rate. International payments cost 2% + 20p per transaction, taken in your customers’ currencies.
Q: When is this available?
A: Our new global network will begin to be available mid-November 2019 in the UK, Europe, Canada, and New Zealand. It will be available in the US and Denmark late 2019 and in Australia in early 2020. You can sign up for a GoCardless account now and we will notify you when international payments are available for your account.
If you are already using GoCardless either through our dashboard or one of our partner integrations, we will be in touch with more information on how you can get started with international payments.
Q: Are there any restrictions to using international payments with FX?
A: We are currently not able to offer international payments with FX to charities using GoCardless to collect payments. This is due to being unable to collect payments on behalf of charities in some of the regions in which we operate. We're continuing to work on expanding our services and hope to be able to offer our international payments with FX service to charities in the future.
Q: I’m a partner with GoCardless. What do I need to do?
A: If any of your current customers are using us in multiple schemes, you should have already received an update on the technical implementation. Please contact our partnerships team at partnerships@gocardless.com
