If you have existing bank debit clients set up with a previous provider, you can migrate their active authorisations to GoCardless to continue collecting payments from them without any disruption or need to re-request approval. This process is commonly referred to as a bulk change.
The only requirement is that your customers are notified of the change in provider before their first payment is collected by GoCardless.
The customer migration process
The process of moving existing bank debit customers from one payments provider to another involves cancelling the payer's authorisations (mandates) within the existing provider and re-setting them up in the new provider’s system on the same day.
As a result, it is not possible to migrate your clients’ payment schedules and/or subscriptions to your GoCardless account as part of this process.
Each country or region has different notification requirements in terms of the information included in the notification and the timeframe in which the customer must receive it. The articles for each individual scheme below provide more information on this.
Once the migration has been completed on your agreed-upon bulk change date, you can set up your customers’ payment schedules again on GoCardless.
The bulk change process requirements vary between bank debit schemes. We recommend familiarising yourself with the steps involved for the country or region where your customers are based from the table below.

Preparing migration data
IMPORTANT: For privacy and data security reasons, we cannot obtain your clients' data from your previous payment provider on your behalf. As the controller of their data, you will need to obtain this information and upload it into GoCardless so that we can complete their set-up. This will ensure that their service and payment cycle can continue seamlessly, with no action required on their part.
Required information
Please note: We provide country (or region) specific csv templates that include columns for all the data we require for your customers in each case.
You can download the CSV template directly from your dashboard.
The data required to set up your customers in GoCardless varies depending on where they, or more specifically, their bank accounts, are located. Different bank debit schemes impose their own requirements on what information is necessary to set up a bank debit authorisation on a bank account in their country (or region) of operation.
Across all schemes, you will need your customers’ personal details (such as full name and/or company name, email address) and their bank details.
Bulk change CSV templates
Your customers’ data will need to be formatted into the corresponding columns within the migration csv template that matches the bank debit scheme (and currency) that your customers’ payments are collected in.
The details and entry format required for each scheme template are available by clicking on the country or region where your customers are based in the table below.

Processing a bulk change
The final step in the client migration process is to import your clients’ data into GoCardless so that their authorisations (mandates) can be recreated.
Please note: Bulk change requests are decided on a case-by-case basis and require certain criteria to be met before they can be processed. If we need any additional information, we'll reach out to you via email.
Our Customer Onboarding team will be notified that you have completed the import process. They will then review the information before completing the final step and confirming completion with you.
